Upgrade to an ios4 without upgrading baseband

I am using my iPhone 3GS from last six months and now i am interested to upgrade an operating system of this phone. I want to install iOS 4 on it but do not want to update the baseband. Can anybody tell me how to do so? Is there anybody who have done it ?

Actually there are two categories to worry about when you hack your iPhone. iPhone is like a computer with a GSM modem attached to it. Now when hacker starts hacking with an iPhone then first of all they hack an Operating System which means that they have found the way to run read/write methods on an os. But hacking the baseband mean that you can be able to use non-AT&T SIM cards on it. So it means that when you upgrade your iPhone then it has not been jailbroken.

Here you have a process to upgrade your iPhone 3GS to iOS 4.
    1. First of connect your iPhone 3GS by using cable.
    2. Open an iTunes.
    3. Choose your phone in the device list.
    4. Not go to the Summary tab and check for an updates there.
    5. Now choose download and install iPhone 3G/3GS to 4.0 firmware.
    6. Wait till the upgrade process finishes.

This will not be updating the baseband of your phone.

Updating an iPhone 3GS to iOS 4 would be having the following features.
    • Multitasking is not supported due to hardware inefficiency.
    • You can send an SMS while playing a game.
    • Battery would not be affecting as this updates has an improved software and technology.
    • All the mail clients (Gmail, Live mail, Yahoo etc) in one inbox.
    • The folders can be named, renamed, deleted with ease.

Upgrading an iPhone 3GS to iOS 4 is not going to update the baseband so i suggest you to upgrade your phone without any problem. And i recommend you to update it from an iTunes only as it would be installing the proper updates on your phone. And if you have jailbreak your phone be careful as it might happen that your phone becomes dead in order to update it. I have faced the same problem.

Re: Upgrade to an ios4 without upgrading baseband

Once you upgrade the OS of your iPhone then it would be automatically upgrading the baseband of your current operating system of your phone and if you want to upgrade an only os version and not baseband then you need to tweak a bit. You can do it by using Pwnage tool which is available for Mac OS X only. If you don’t have a Mac then we have a 2.2.1 custom firmware.
