    Debian sound problem

    Hi
I installed a Lenny the other day with KDE4. It happens that I can not listen, I have no sound whatsoever with vlc, Juke etc. Same if I try sites like daily-motion, youtube, etc.. On Ubuntu I had no worries, under Arch (in dual-boot with Lenny) either. If I run vlc for example, while bathing, the song starts, but no sound and I have an error. I have tried to do this, but no use
    Code:
    malicia @ rogue: ~ / Music / LeoFerre / AvecLeTemps ... $ lsof / dev / dsp
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE / OFF NODE NAME
    knotify4 3623 malicia 17w CHR 14.3 0t0 5336 / dev / dsp
I think that knotify4 would pose a lock somehow on / dev / dsp. But I am not sure about this.
Any one knows how to bring the sound back. Thanks in advance.

    Hi
I confess that it is an original problem. I do know about KDE but I do not think KNotify have been a lock on / dev / dsp. From the errors you have, is that alsa can not access / dev / dsp.
    Two tracks for more details:
    - Check if a log is vlc (style / var / log / vlc / *. log)
    - Causes of his error by launching vlc then made a
    Code:
    dmesg | tail
to see if something is put in dmesg.
If you did not have enough 10 lines, you do
    Code:
    dmesg | tail-n N
here N is the number of rows you want to see. If you found something interesting, keep us informed. bye.

I do not see much connection between the audio and knotify . You have tried to reconfigure your card with alsa? Also check if the right modules are loaded. In fact, what is the name of your sound card? If any problem feel free to post back.

    Re: Debian sound problem

    Hi
I think that Sqeeze is a death match where as lenny is a very good operating system with kde4.2. I do not know you, but something seemed super weird, I had no / etc / asound.conf while alsa was installed. I created this file by trying to pass the sound through dmix, but now when I start alsa in this case, I had an error like:
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c: 1008: (snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Well, the slave is occupied by Alsa and kmix. So we'll say it a bit beyond me here. I will try to install gnome and see what happens in that environment. Till then if you guys have any solution then do post back.

    Hi
To generate an error clean it is possible , Launching your system, open a terminal as root and restart the service Alsa:
    / etc / init.d / alsa-utils restart
You will have all the messages on your terminal. Hope this will help you.

Whatever the software, once it is connected to alsa, a lock is set. So you need a software mixer that mixes the differing sound. In KDE it is art. We must activate the software is configured for.
