    Modem problem under Debian

    Hello,
My new modem can be connected via USB or Ethernet but to take advantage of my 8 Mbps connection, I plug in ethernet. I am a problem because there is no more ethernet port (and I have that a) to connect my cable network and thus creates a small LAN (connection sharing and printer). What solutions are possible? I can not add a network card because it is a mini-pc.

    Hello,
I am not understanding: what good is the Ethernet port that is not available? Otherwise, I would say: investing in a small router (which typically have four Ethernet ports for connection sharing) your LAN devices branch above, and the modem on the WAN port. So you have your LAN on one side, and your Internet Access "protected" by the router at the other.

    Hello,
In fact, now, I have an old modem that is plugged into usb on my mini-pc. The ethernet port of my mini-pc is connected to a cable network that is used to connect a laptop and thus make him eligible for the printer connection and mini-pc. I changed formula (higher flow rate ( 8 Mbps instead of 512 K) for less. In short, take advantage of the 8-Mbit, I had to buy a new modem. It must be connected ethernet and not USB for connection of 8 Mbps. So the ethernet port on my mini pc-is now occupied by the adsl connection and can not accommodate the cable network.

    Hello,
You plug your modem into the router via ethernet cable to the WAN port, your mini pc, your old PC and your printer are connected by Ethernet LAN port on each router. Do not replace the modem router, they each have a function, the router between the LAN WAN only (it is the nat), it needs to be connected to the modem that you bought to allow access to the Internet (some routers have integrated modems, but it is not the case here)

    Hello,
I agree with the above post and would like to add some more info to it. Your mini PC, and your old PC (with your printer) are in LAN, and can all go out on the internet if you want via the modem that is connected to the router. The router / modem solution is the easiest and most secure if you want to share Internet connection among several computers. It will not work with a switch only (except enable connection sharing on one machine).

    Hello,
I know the linksys wrt54g works well with the orange Ethernet modems. I have also been replaced by orange modems modem / router ( integrated whole) always at linksys (WAG54G) without any problem either. This will certify you (or not) the operation of their equipment with one or more routers on the market.

A router does not necessarily provide multiple Ethernet ports, while AC is often the case. The "modem" is actually a modem router, then you just have to put a small switch on the LAN port to connect to all your Machinery And forget the USB port. I guess I am correct here and the solution works for you.
