    Can't Browse the 2008 Domain

New installation of Server 2008. The network is not connected to the
internet because the client has no internet. Three brand new computers on
the domain running Windows XP SP3. Quarterhorse is the Domain controller.
Each machine, Win, Place, and Show, are on the domain. DNS points to
Quarterhorse and is installed on Quarterhorse. DHCP is running and giving
    out IP addresses.

When I browse the network from Quarterhorse, it only shows Quarterhorse.
On the XP machines, when I browse the network, it browses by going to Entire
Network, Microsoft Windows Network, and I can see the domain name. But when
I click on the domain name, it says that the domain is not accessible.

I can map a drive and attach to the files on Quarterhorse, but I cannot
    browse to the drives.

    Please help!

If running net view in the DC, do you receive system error? Or this search
    result may help.

Re: Can't Browse the 2008 Domain

windows xp uses the computer browser service to enumerate a list of netbios
names on the network. vista and 2008 dont rely on this anymore, although they
still should support it for backward compatibility.

on a domain network with active directory the pdc emulator service is the
default master browser for a network segment. any other network segments auto
negotiate which computer is the master browser based on the os version and
send this list to the pdc role (routers need to be configured to allow this
traffic otherwise you'll have multiple browser lists across the network)

you can specify all this in the registry. or turn off the computer browser
service on all the systems except the domain controllers. group policy can
    help with that.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/188305

there's a good article for how to troubleshoot this. you can also look for a
microsoft tool called browmon.exe which is a gui based tool. old nt4
resourcekit but will still work on xp/2003 and probably even vista machines.

for future purposes you should probably re-educate the staff on using a newer
technology called DFS. not really knew actually, its been around since the
nt4 days but not everyone uses it, especially on a small network where there
is only 1 or 2 file servers. but that is the next gen file sharing network
browsing protocol, instead of using computer browser service, netbios and
    wins.

but if you opt to stick with computer browser, then read up on netbios and
wins. computer browser uses those protocols for getting the network names.

    I would check that

    1. Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled on the server's NIC.
    2. The computer browser service is enabled and started on the server.
