    Archon Thermalright CPU Coolers

Thermalright has launched the Archon a CPU cooler designed for 140mm fan on the market. If needed, up the large fan mounted to two. Contrary to the last cooler the likes of Thermalright HR-02 is the Archon on a tower concept and six 6mm heatpipes. To install with the Archon and the possibility of two 140mm cars, Thermalright would present a more powerful CPU cooler, than in the Venomous X, which is designed for a 120mm fan concept. The dimensions of Archon coolers are down correspondingly wide. 53 x 155 x 170mm with a weight of 806 grams (without fans) are displayed. Incompatibilities, such as high heat spreaders on memory kits, more likely to occur only related and can be almost impossible to take into account the other hand, users of smaller housing or passive graphics cards, the width must be. For heat dissipation 50 aluminum fins and six 6mm heatpipes are provided. The cooling plate itself was made of copper and as with Thermalright usual convex. The entire Archon CPU cooler was plated here.

    Technical details:

    • Dimensions - 53 x 155 x 170mm
    • Weight - 806g (without fan)
    • Fans - 900-1300 rpm
    • Volume - 19-21 dB (A)
    • Fan Dimensions - up to 2x 140mm
    • Air flow - 96-125 m³ / h

The included 140mm fan TY-14 was the last tests on Thermalright coolers thoroughly convince. PC-Cooling provides users with a model with two fans on that, we'll also take into account in tests. Connected via a 4 pin connector with PWM controlled to reach a speed of 900 rpm to 1,300 rpm and a capacity of 96 125m ³ at a sound pressure between 19 and 21dB (A). The installation itself is performed on the well-known "Pressure Vault Bracket" said mounting system with variable pressure between about 40 and 70 pounds rich. Here, increased the Thermalright cooler attachment to cause as few incompatibilities with electrolytic capacitors.

The scope of delivery are next to the mounting kits for Intel LGA 775/1366/1156 also for AMD AM2/AM2 + / AM3, regardless of this, whether it is to be mounted vertically or horizontally. Besides the fans are still eight rubber dampers, an illustrated guide, two pairs of clips for 140mm/120mm fan and thermal compound. The processing is used on a very high level and does not provide any reason for complaint.

    Installation

The installation of Archon CPU cooler goes through the manual and the self-assembly system relatively easily be resolved by hand. The Vault Pressure bracket is also available for an excellent pressure. We put this one to the maximum. In summary, the assembly divided into the following steps:
    • Preparation
    • Mounting the CPU cooler

    Preparation :

The motherboard must be removed to attach the multi-socket back plate behind the motherboard. Who has to present a rear section in the motherboard tray can also try carefully about this. Screwed to the backplate from the front with four thumb screws. Then, the "Anchoring Bracket Mount", which acts as a framework in place and also screwed.

    Mounting the CPU cooler :

After the CPU with thermal paste or a thermal pad was pretreated, the "mounting plate" attached to the cooler ground between the heat pipes and tightened with the two corresponding spring screws until they stop using a screwdriver. In the middle, the pressure can be increased infinitely. Then the Anti-Vibration-strips hang up and lock the fan with the clips.

Finally, only has the power to the fan or fans are made. Now the archon Thermalright CPU cooler mounted and the CPU, in this case an Intel Core i7 920 can be cooled off immediately. The temperatures of the CPU should be definitely checked immediately after installation to prevent an assembly error.

    Test System:

    Hardware:

    Software:
    • Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit SP2
    • Everest Ultimate
    • Core2Max Performance
    • SiSoft Sandra
    • Core Temp
    • CPU Temp

    Temperature:

For the temperature measurements and utilization include the software we use Everest Ultimate, Core Temp, CPU Temp, Core2MaxPerf, CPUTempWatch and Sisoft Sandra. The room temperature during the entire test period, between 24.5 ° C and 25.0 ° C. To rule out other inconsistencies due to different amount of thermal compound, we chose the Coolaboratory-thermal pad. It was in our test convinced by good properties. The open test bed serves as an initially only the internal checks. The temperatures were determined after one hour exposure and after 30 minutes idle state by means of an average. Major differences were in the room temperature, not during the test course. The CPU has been, if not otherwise indicated, operating in the default values and the fan, as used for comparison of the Intel boxed cooler as well as other former volunteers, set to 100% of the speed.

    Volume

Our used PCE-318 covers in the frequency weighting A / C and a frequency range of 31.5 Hz - 8 KHz a measuring range up to a minimum 26 dB. The accuracy is + / - 1.5 dB. The room is very quiet and is subjectively measured at below 30 dB (A). Since we do not have an anechoic chamber, the values should not be regarded as absolute and not outside our test environment reproducible. The measurements therefore support only our subjective impression and allow comparisons to other components of the test system or previously tested coolers. Was measured from the front left oblique in a distance of 50 cm - in around from the direction of the head of a user at the right of it on the table standing tower case.

The volume with the TY-140 fan surprised once again. Still on the Thermalright HR-02 cooler, the fan was simply too low to obtain meaningful values. The Silver Arrow cooler we were able to elicit because of air turbulence 33.6 dB (A). Now with the Archon were cooler at 1,300 rpm, 38.0 dB (A). With the fan this time effected min also indicated 1,300 rpm and not "only" 1,200 rpm as before, which is due to normal manufacturing tolerances. However, the noise is not annoying in the closed case. Who can run the fan rpm to just under 1,000 rpm, is it not rather in the overall system can make.

    Test Run / temperature standard

    Measurement :

    Thermalright CPU temperatures Archon

    CPU temperatures :

The Thermalright Archon shows peak values of cooling power in the simultaneous connection of the adjacent fan speed and overall volume. Who else wants to get out of the cooler should resort to the version with two fans. With about 700 rpm, it also enjoys absolute Silent fetishists with inaudibility.

    Conclusion

Even with the Archon CPU Cooler Thermalright can again convince the editors. Very good workmanship and a good supply contact for excellent cooling performance and the good of the overall package matching fan. However, this does not come cheap, for around 65.00 euros requires PC-Cooling for the version with a fan and 75.00 € for two fans, with one opposed to the single fan can save money or buy something. The Archon Thermalright CPU cooler receives the full purchase recommendation from TechArena editors.
