You make sure your Internet connection is valid, because it may need to be a new version of iTunes and iPod software downloaded to your computer. If you have not installed, download and install the latest version of the iTunes。
Open iTunes, and then use the iPod with the USB or FireWire cable to connect the iPod to the computer. Later iPod will appear in the iTunes "Source" panel. In the "Source" panel, select the iPod, you'll see information about the iPod appears in the iTunes main window Summary Tab. Check and reply.

You need to read "Update action" and "recovery operation" between the different is very important. IPod update operation is the installation of control software stored in the iPod does not affect the songs and files on disk. Restore operation will erase the iPod contents on the disk and restore iPod to its original factory state. All the best.

First of all, understand the "Update" and "restore" the difference between the two is important. "Update" is the control of iPod software update and update the hard drive fireware. Update does not affect the stored songs in the iPod hard drive and files. "Restore" will erase the iPod hard drive and return to the initial factory settings. The restoration will remove the hard drive all the songs and files, so before at the resumption of iPod songs and files first backup. All the best.

The operation is in the iPod preferences to default, which means that regardless of when to use the cable to connect iPod to your computer iTunes will automatically open. If the operating system to 10.3.4 and the iPod with a dock connector, it can be restored through the USB. Some with a USB port in restoring the iPod, had to disconnect the iPod from your computer and connect to the iPod power adapter to complete the recovery process. Some through the USB connection, iPod, including iPod mini (2nd generation) and iPod nano, do not need to connect to the power adapter.
