The extensions, which are loaded into memory at boot time, modify the operating system works. If they are incompatible with the version of system software that runs, are corrupted or conflicting with each other, they can cause unexpected. Check in the Extensions folder, Control Panels in the System Folder if there are control panels, system extensions and a selector other than Apple (for example, virus detection software, screen savers and utilities compression).

Sometimes extensions are also called INIT. Usually found in the Extensions folder or the Control Panels folder of your System Folder. Sometimes they are located at the level of the System Folder itself. As they are loaded into memory at boot time of the system the icons usually appear in the bottom of the screen. Use the Memory control panel to disable virtual memory, 32-bit addressing and memory manager and to reduce the disk cache to 96 K or less. Use the File Sharing control panel to disable file sharing. Restart the computer.

To determine which of the extensions removed was causing the problem, drag the extensions one by one to the icon of the closed System Folder. The system puts each in its proper place. Restart the computer after each addition. When the problem occurs again, you know that the last extension dragged to the System Folder is the problem. Remove it and restart the computer. Check your version number to make sure it is compatible. Try reinstalling from the original diskettes or contact the software vendor.

Restart the Macintosh computer and hold down the spacebar until you open the Control Panel Extensions Manager. Active groups of extensions and control panels by clicking on the left of each item, which appears as a mark indicating that it is activated. Close the Control Panel Extensions Manager by clicking the close box located in the upper left corner. Try to reproduce the anomaly.

If only active when you stop system extensions (Mac OS 8.x full) the computer boots correctly and your problem does not recur, then there is an extension conflict. If using the group "Mac OS 8.x complete" problems continue, you must perform a clean installation of system software. One group is composed of extensions, control panels, extensions of the system and boot Items Items Shutdown. Selected group shows the group name extensions currently active on startup.

In the Extensions Manager, open the View menu. There are more options besides the typical list of folders. View by Packages "and can activate and deactivate entire software packages with a single mouse click (very useful when trying to troubleshoot problems with extensions). The "like items" is a great list of all extensions, control panels, Items and Items starting off team (similar to Extensions Manager of System 7).
