Windows 7 OS vs Kubuntu OS

I am having the HP desktop at my home and i want to know Can i install the Kubuntu Operating system of the Linux in my computer system. Please tell me which is the better operating system from these two, 1-Microsoft Windows 7 and the 2- Linux Kubuntu operating system. Also provide me the system configuration for installing these two Operating System. I am currently using the Windows XP operating system in my computer system.

The biggest advantage of the Linux Kubuntu is that it is the freeware. This means that you can get this Operating System free of cost.
