Windows 7 locks up frequently

Hello. I have a desktop system with Windows 7 installed as the operating system installed in it. The problem is that my system locks up frequently. It do not happen everytime but it does get freezed frequently. Is it because of the operating system that I have installed. When it locks up the Hard disks LED remains constant and do not flicker. Please help.
