Install VLC Player in Ubuntu 9.04

I'm a complete noob when it comes to operating system other then Windows XP. I have somehow with the help of a friend installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my system. I have a large multimedia collection which has files in almost all the possible formats. I need a multimedia player which i could use to view my multimedia content. So my friend suggested me VLC Player. I have it on my windows OS too. But the question is how do i Install VLC Player in Ubuntu 9.04 OS? When i try to run it it gives me error like no application found to open file. Any help? Thanks!!

You cannot run and install Windows executable files [.exe] on linux. You must have a VLC Player setup for debain based linux [.deb] which could be installed on your Ubuntu installation. Also select teh proper package from 32bit and 64bit according to your OS. Hope this helps you...

If you have a .deb package you can simply install it by double clicking it to run. this process is similar to installing softwares windows. Else you can go with this method. Open terminal and type :

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-esd mozilla-plugin-vlc

It will download VLC Player and install it and it will aslo install VLC Player plugin for your firefox.
