    sad Vista - No IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers

    Hi all

    Been having a problem with burning time on my DVD drive and have read/been told to check It's running in DMA not PIO. Go to my device manager as instructed but the is no IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers tab to expand.

    What is going on? Even in the Windows help it gives clear instructions how to get there..... where are my IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers?!!!!

    Vista with Dell XPS420

    Help greatly appreciated

    Mark

    You could try forcing a re-detection of the device.

    Run Device Manager and highlight the DVD ROM drive. Then right-click and choose Uninstall. This should remove the device from the registry. Then go to the Action menu, and choose "Scan for Hardware changes" to detect then device. This "should" create fresh entries for the device, based on the hardware detection. You should reboot the machine after you uninstall the device and before you do the hardware detection.

    If your BIOS allows the SATA device to be identified as a SATA (IDE) channel, and the software drivers also supports that, then you will have multiple ATA channels because the SATA is being identified as a ATA channel as well as the Parallel ADA (PATA) channel. So you have two channels in your case.

    Try this. If you are comfortable editing the registry.Create a Restore point and back up the registry. Open regedit.

    Look for: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\CurrentControlSet\SetControlClass
    Key name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    Value Data:[Delete all value data from upper and lower filters]
    Note-Do not delete the key or the multi-string values. Delete only the data values. The keys may be in more than 1 place. You will have to search for them.

    Exit regedit and reboot your system.
