I have done a complete reformat of hard drive and installed Windows XP. As soon as my computer was up and I logged in, I saw that darned red shield and the Windows Security Alerts on the bottom.

"red shield and the Windows Security Alerts" it doesn't means that you have virus in your fresh formatted computer. Those notifications indicates that you might have turned off "windows Update" OR when you dont have installed any antivirus or if the antivirus is out dated. Just make sure you have good antivirus installed in your pc and the red shield will go away.

If you think that your pc is secured by lastest windows security updates or antivirus software, then you can simply turn it off. You need to go to Start -> Control Panels -> Security Center.
