    PC turns off

    I have a Core2 duo 2 Ghz
    Vista 64-bit and XP SP2
    256Mb NVidia 8600 GT
    2 Gb DDR2 RAM
    Asus P5NSLI Motherboard
    SMPS VIP 460W

Do a lotta gaming and other Uses as well.....so the PC remains on for hours on end....

Problem: When i m using the PC it turns-off (as though the power switch has been turned off and then turned on quickly) after 2-3 hrs in both the OS

    What i tried doing:

Tried to check if the board is shorting somewhere.....(assembled the entire PC again)

Using a different SMPS.....so far working fine.....

Please lemme know what may be the probable causes of the problem.....

Also for the above given config and my usage how many watt SMPS should i ideally use.....(300W / 460W / higher ???)

what may happen if for example the ideal power requirement is 400W and i use a lower wattage eg 300W ??

Can i have more details about your computer? Is it a recent one are you sure that the games your are playing is compatible with your Os. Sometimes it happens that some games cause natural conflits to your systems - When your computer turnoff- does it restart automatically after? Have you receive any warning message from windows ?

It sounds like the chip is overheating and that's what is causing the shut down.you might just need to resit the heatsink. Just pop it out, rotate it, and stick it back in.probe your BIOS and see if there are any temp thresholds or anything like that.

just an update to the above replies...

today i was trying with a friend's SMPS which is surely working fine....

i started the PC it well for 2-3 hours....shut it down and when i tried to restart after few hours.....it turned off again.....just after the screen where i select the OS...i tried selecting XP and then Vista....turned off both times after the OS loading screens.....then i press del at startup to go to the setup menu......i was just browsing thru the options there...didn't change anything....again turn-off.....

the net time the PC remains started during the above exercise is 2-3 mins....

hope this will help u guys evaluate my problem better....

thanks for the replies though.....i m trying out resitting the heat sink....

You should try to get SpeedFan and have it log your CPU temps just in case.

just let the computer sit and heep a good eye on those temps, and worry when it gets close to 72 degrees C (safety temp shutdown).

so either this is an issue with power (get a better PSU) or it's hardware.

Every thing works on power supply so check first for power supply its is possible that some times power supply works and after working several time it unable to handle load due to its poor quality so make sure you have proper power supply....
