    3DFX Glide Question

    Hello everyone,

    I just installed an old game on my PC, 3DFX greatly improved performance and visual quality of the game modern PCs are not equipped with 3DFX, I wonder if one or more emulators exist and where to find them. Also I want to know more about the 3DFX Glide and an Installation of software Glide. So please provide me with the proper information.

    Thank you in advance for your answers.

    Re: 3DFX Glide Question

    Hello,
    Most games designed for 3DFX (Glide) usually operate as in OpenGL. Test to select OpenGL mode, it should work. Also I would like to say that the modern PC today no longer need a map 3DFX: 3DFX cards were useful when the first 3d games made their appearance. Today (and even several years), all games using DirectX and OpenGL APIs and these two are now well above the 3DFX Glide, which has evolved over the disappearance of 3DFX.

    Re: 3DFX Glide Question

    A 3DFX is useful if you have a PC because most games that used 3D CAREB were only compatible with 3DFX cards. Additionally, the Glide API is the fastest on the old PC. If you have a PC: Try to find a 3DFX card used for emulators offer much lower performance than a true 3DFX card (you must translate the instructions Glide Directx or Opengl). Also I would like to warn you that there are no official driver for Windows XP 3DFX.

    Re: Installing software Glide

    I am trying to explain you about Installing software Glide :
    The pilots and the Glide library are combined in a single compressed file. Unzip / untar them with tar and gzip and follow the instructions in the README and INSTALL files that come with the software. By default, files are installed in the lib, bin, include under /usr/local/glide/ path and access to libraries is added to the corresponding ld.conf . The installation files and editing ld.conf are independent steps. Without the step of updating the ld.conf, you must manually set the environment variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH. The header files must be visible to the compiler if you want to compile your own graphics! If the default installation does not satisfy you, make sure that libraries are accessible otherwise you'll get a can't load library 'libglide.so'. Hope you will able to install it now.!!

    Re: 3DFX Glide Question

    The Glide distribution includes a directory with test programs. These programs are copyrighted 3Dfx. Their use is permitted only for holders of a card with a 3Dfx. Refer to the LICENSE file for distribution or website www.3dfx.com for more details. Although binaries are available, it is recommended that you compile programs yourself. Some executable files such needs have alpha.3df you find in the same directory. All tests were conducted with a resolution of 640 by 480. Some characters will ask the other confined to view Press A Key To Begin Test . Beware of possible events before grabbing X11 if it also works on the same screen.

    Re: 3DFX Glide Question

    The introduction of the 3Dfx Linux requires the following steps :
    • Installation of the card;
    • Glide software installation;
    • compiling, linking and / or execution of the application.

    Refer to the instructions given by the manufacturer of your hardware to put the card in place. It should not be necessary to go change the IRQ, DMA channels: Plug & Plant (tm) or the output values of plant are supposed to work. We did not need to interrupt. The overlap in memory with other devices are the only possible conflicts.

    Re: 3DFX Glide Question

    For many of us have begun to play on a PC to the mid-1990s, the name immediately evokes memories of a quantity as it represented a fundamental change in the world of gaming. Indeed there was a time not so long ago when the 3D PC was synonymous with slow and big pile of pixels that are the hallmarks of a software rendering scenes. Failing to follow ATI or nVidia in terms of power with a single chip, 3dfx used its SLI technology to its latest graphics processor market, the VSA-100. Instead of putting a single VSA-100 graphics card, why not put 2? The Voodoo 5 5500 was born. It was not all ... just before the death of society is a card that a legend was born today at the prototype stage: the Voodoo 5 6000 that shipped no less than four VSA-100 and 128MB memory video while the average was 32MB at the time.
