Set a background image on Vista folders

To install this feature, we will have to download a small application that will take to install an additional tab in the properties of a folder in the explorer.

    • Direct download link: AveFolderBg.zip

    • Set Explorer to show file extensions: To view hidden files in Vista. To do so: Go Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab > Under "Hidden files and folders" click the one that says "Show hidden files and folders" AND UNCHECK "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)"

    • Right-click the downloaded file and select Extract All to unzip it.

    • A Zip browser window will open containing the unzipped files.

    • This window contains 2 files:

      • 32bits
      • 64bits

    • If your Vista is 32-bit, open the folder 32bits, if 64-bit, open the folder 64bits

    • To install the feature, right-click the install.bat file and choose Run as administrator

    • A message must first tell you that the registration of a dll named VistaFolderBackground.dll is fine. Click OK

    • A warning message appears asking you to confirm the update of the register, Click Yes to accept the merger.

    • Another success message is displayed warning you that the update of the register was properly conducted. Click OK to close the window.

    • Launch Windows Explorer and then locate the folder (or drive) you want to customize.

    • Right-click the folder (or drive) and choose Properties:

    • An additional Folder Background tab should be visible in the folder properties (or drive).

    • Select this tab and then click the Set Image button to locate the image you want to put in the background.

    • Once the image selected, click Apply to save the change.

    Notes:

    • You can also change the text color of the name of the files by clicking on Text Color
    • If you want to apply the same customization to subfolders of current folder, check the Apply to Sub Folders also

You can judge the results immediately by opening the folder.

Note: To uninstall the feature (removal of the Background tab in the Folder properties files), right-click the file uninstall.bat then choose Run as administrator.
