To install this feature, we will have to download a small application that will take to install an additional tab in the properties of a folder in the explorer.
- Direct download link: AveFolderBg.zip
- Set Explorer to show file extensions: To view hidden files in Vista. To do so: Go Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab > Under "Hidden files and folders" click the one that says "Show hidden files and folders" AND UNCHECK "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)"
- Right-click the downloaded file and select Extract All to unzip it.
- A Zip browser window will open containing the unzipped files.
- This window contains 2 files:
- 32bits
- 64bits
- If your Vista is 32-bit, open the folder 32bits, if 64-bit, open the folder 64bits
- To install the feature, right-click the install.bat file and choose Run as administrator
- A message must first tell you that the registration of a dll named VistaFolderBackground.dll is fine. Click OK
- A warning message appears asking you to confirm the update of the register, Click Yes to accept the merger.
- Another success message is displayed warning you that the update of the register was properly conducted. Click OK to close the window.
- Launch Windows Explorer and then locate the folder (or drive) you want to customize.
- Right-click the folder (or drive) and choose Properties:
- An additional Folder Background tab should be visible in the folder properties (or drive).
- Select this tab and then click the Set Image button to locate the image you want to put in the background.
- Once the image selected, click Apply to save the change.
Notes:
- You can also change the text color of the name of the files by clicking on Text Color
- If you want to apply the same customization to subfolders of current folder, check the Apply to Sub Folders also
You can judge the results immediately by opening the folder.
Note: To uninstall the feature (removal of the Background tab in the Folder properties files), right-click the file uninstall.bat then choose Run as administrator.
