corrupted update. how do i remove to download again?

The automatic update for Internet Explorer 7 downloaded, but when it
installed, the only tihng that happened was IE7 crashed itself and the
computer every time I tried to start it. So I did a system restore, and got
back IE6. The icon for automatic updates came up again soon after, and I
tried again but this time the automatic update didn't even finish, and
crashed the computer so badly I had to do a hard restart. Now I get the same
message and I'm sure it's for the came corrupted file but I can't find the
download to delete it so that it can be downloaded again. What file must I
hunt for to delete?

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Install IE7 *exactly* per
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install [ignore the reference
to Vista in the URL]

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

seek support in this newsgroup: microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

Many thanks, I think it's now working although I did not uninstall Zonealarm.
Sorry, but that's just too much! I['m amazed anyone gets a successful update
with IE7 without all those workarounds, having read the link. Why does
Microsoft not warn of errors or conflicts with virus and spy checking
software prior to the automatic install? Anyone with any intelligence would
be running one or both on their computer and therefore is virtually
guaranteed a problem with installing IE7.

And one last rant - the "community notification" e-mail which told me of
this reply had a link which led to a blank page! I had to go hunting through
all the posts in the forum to find mine (and therefore this answer) again.

Access to these newsgroups via the Community web-interface has been
problematic since 05 Jan-08 (server problems, I suppose). This hasn't
affected accessing these newsgroups via an NNTP newsreader (e.g., Outlook
Express).
