Cutting and pasting in MS Project

I have inherited a programme plan and the first thing I need to do is re organise the plan. I am having problems when moving tasks to different locations in the plan, ie to under a different project. The first issue is that dependencies are being lost and the second is that dates are being changed seemingly randomly. Is there any advice that you can give to rectify this. As you may be able to tell I am fairly new to MS Project

You can maintain task dependencies between any predecessor and successor tasks, regardless of where you move the task, if at least one of the following criteria is met:

    1. The task is not being moved from or pasted into a series of consecutively linked tasks.
    2. The task being moved contains task dependencies other than finish-to-start.
    3. The Autolink inserted or moved tasks check box is not selected on the Schedule tab of the Options dialog box (Tools menu).
