Overall, when you need to install software, you must first see if this is the list of software on the official repositories, which is already the case for many of them. For this, it is very easy, you have to Application Menu > Add / Remove. Then just look for the software you want and if that is the first time then you can do that by selecting all software in source. After that install the same.

It is also possible to install software by clicking on links like apt: / / on the Internet. For example to install vlc just click on this link: apt: / / vlc. It is really recommended to go this way when we started, and avoid everything that is installed via compilation like tar, gz file, etc. I spend as much as possible to avoid this by setting the air my installation. However some software is not present in the deposits.

Simply put, a repository is a server that contains one or more packages (software or libraries). This has the advantage of allowing the installation of software very simply, this installation can be done directly via the Internet, without requiring any CDRom. Similarly, it is very convenient for updates, since you can check back regularly on the filing updates made.

By default, only the deposits maintained by Canonical are used by your Ubuntu distribution. With this, you're sure to have an updated system with applications compatible with your distribution, and properly integrated. However, it is possible that you have the need to install software that are not on the deposits of Canonical. It is therefore be possible to reference multiple deposits.

These are the main repositories of software supported by Ubuntu. These deposits are strongly advised. It is a repository that contains proprietary software. Warning, these software are not supported by Ubuntu. This is software that is maintained by the Ubuntu community, but whose support is not provided by Ubuntu. So mostly if you download them from there then it works.

Under Linux, there is something that is necessary and that does not exist on windows the package manager. This tool actually allows to manage facilities and uninstall software completely automated way, by getting the install software directly from a trusted source and installing it. The principle behind ubuntu is that software is packaged in. Deb is a roughly equivalent. Msi files under windows, and more powerful.
