I have seen that this kind of problem happens if your mouse is been attched to the computer system but if the cable pin is bit loos then it keeps on attaching and then detaching randomly as cable goes on moving. And once your mouse got disconnected then it might happen that it gets installed as a new device which would be having all the default settings as per the windows operating system.

This could happen if the SetPoint which you have installed on your xp computer system is bit older, I suggest you to install the latest version of the SetPoint on your windows xp. Actually the controls of the Logitech G5 are mainly set from the SetPoint and not from the mouse settings of windows so you might not have set anything from the SetPoint.

This problem could also happen if your windows xp mouse drivers have got wrong somewhere. And now you have to reinstall the drivers of your windows xp operating system and then check that this problem goes away or not.
I have seen this kind of problem but most of them have got solved by installing the proper drivers according to an operating system.

I was having the same problem on my windows xp pc on which i have connected the Logitech G5 mouse. I uninstalled the Set Point and then cleaned the hard drive and ran windows check disk program. Then installed the Set Point 4.6 and then rebooted and now my mouse works without any problem. I guess even you should reinstall your Set Point.

There could be something complicated with the setpoint on your computer system. I think you should check the mouse settings on your SetPoint. Simplest way to get rid of this problem is to reinstall the SetPoint on your computer.
Make sure that you have installed all the drivers of your windows operating system then begin with the new installation of SetPoint.
