Unrecognized File Format : Error in MS-excel

Hello, I am using Microsoft Office 2003 on my Windows xp and while using it computer gets infected with the virus. So, I just installed the Avast Home Edition on my computer and scan my computer. And I was able to delete all the detected viruses. Some of them was clean by me. But, when I try to open some of the files from the Excel it gives me error of "Unrecognized File Format". Why did I am getting this problem? How can I solve this problem? That all files are my required files, so it is necessary to open them.

It may be possible that the files when you scan with the help of Avast Home Edition gets corrupted as they are having Virus in it. And as all the necessary details from them gets deleted, it is not possible to open them with the help of Microsoft Excel 2003. So, I think you wont be able to recover all those files directly. So, now it is necessary to create new files by your own.

I think that the files which you want to view are still infected by the virus and that is why they are not able to open by the use of your Excel. So, you may need to scan your computer again with some other applications and try to open that afterward. So, do it. You can make use of any antivirus as below:
    • AVG Anti-Virus
    • BitDefender
    • F-Secure
    • Kaspersky Anti-Virus
    • McAfee VirusScan

Hello, You can't able to open those files. As your computer got infected by the virus at that time some of these files also got infected and virus change the file format or something necessary to open the file and that is why now when you are trying to open that files it is giving you error as "Unrecognized File Format". So, you need to open that files either with different version of Microsoft Office or you can check those files on any other computer.

I think you need to scan those all files again for the virus. If you don't get the virus in it, then you can check for the use of the Microsoft Office 2007 for opening those all files as there may be possibility that your Office 2003 is not able to open that files due to some of the changes. And Office 2007 can open it without any problem. So, try for it.

I think you are having problem of your Microsoft Office 2003 and you are thinking that you are having problem of files. As you are getting error as "Unrecognized File Format" from your Ms-Excel, it states that your Ms-Excel is not able to recognize those files. Then it may possible that your office 2003 files are not working well due to the virus problem and you are getting this error. So, just try for reinstalling your Office 2003 and try to open all those files again. I think all files will open.
