How to edit text in PDF file?

All I have is the basic reader. Is special software required to do this? What about passwords and/or restrictions? Please don't be too technical if providing some options.

I've done some Googling and notice tons of software out there which will apparently do this. I'm always concerned about downloading software as you never know what might "come with it" from a negative standpoint.

I would appreciate some recommendations of software you have had good success with and is easy to work with.

According to me, if you planning to do many small or many major text corrections/changes to the document, then i would suggest you to go back to the source file and do to the changes there itself, because it would be more considerable control over the exact layout and look, and there can be possibility to automate the corrections to save time. I would rather convert PDF to Word then edit in Word document. Don't worry Don, not all the downloading software contain virus. Go to download.com, the software it provide should be safe.
