Shutdowns after using an external monitor in vista

I am running vista SP2 on a Toshiba Satellite with an intel Centrino and 4G of RAM. I use an S-Video connection to my TV to watch video. After I have it connected for a while it shuts down. The first time it happened I was there and saw messages about the display driver having trouble, then a BSOD. I haven't seen those warnings or the BSOD but I haven't always been right there when it happens. I'll leave the computer connected and when I come back, its shutdown.

I can start it in safe mode, but after 10 or 15 minutes it shuts down again, with no warning. It won't start right away, but if I wait a minute it will start up again. Only now it will stay on for only a minute or two before it shuts down.

The first time this happened a few months ago I used a restore point and the problem stopped. I suspect I successfully connected the computer and TV at least once but then it happened again. I did some more poking around in the Event Viewer but I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. I did find one event that said "the last sleep transition was unsuccessful." Don't know if its related or not.

Some of the critical errors I have found are related to:
    netprofm - error 1068
    netman - 1068
    wsearch - error 1084
    fdPHost - 1068
    ShellHWDetection

I've searched the web and tried to filter through a lot of the information about shutdowns and BSODs, but can't find anything related to using an external monitor. The problem has definitely only happened after using the external monitor.

Has anyone had this problem? Or does anyone have any suggestions on what exactly I should look for in the event viewer? I have been able to run an AVG scan which finds nothing, though one time it informed me of a few locked files. I certainly appreciate any help or advice.

    Thanks

Check VGA connector if it has come loose. I am not so sure if VGA connector is directly soldered on the motherboard. Check your ram, I had the same issue. Settings are saved to ram. If you have some bad memory, the settings are corrupted and part of the result is the monitor will not display.

Thanks for the help. I haven't checked any of those issues because the computer is only a few months old. Also, both monitors display totally fine - up until the computer shuts down.

You are getting this problem simply due to the problem in your drivers. So, if you want to solve your problem then you need to install the drivers for your video device. Your drivers related to the display device has been corrupted and that is why you are getting this problem of the shut down. So, just install the drivers for display device and then restart your system. It will solve your problem.

My problem was also the same one, but fixed it by doing some settings which i got from my friend. It is very useful and it really does work. The settings is:
1] Right click on the desktop

    2] Choose "Graphics Options".

    3]Choose "Output To".

    4]Choose "Extended Desktop".

    5] Choose "Monitor+Notebook".

After doing this, hope so your problem get solve.

I had thought of that but can't find anything to update. I went into the device manager and tried to updated the "display adapter" drivers, the "monitors" drivers, and the "sound, video and game controller" drivers. Windows said that they were all up to date except the RealTek High Definition Audio. I can't imagine that one was the problem because with the S-Video cable I was still using the earphone jack to run the audio through my stereo, which I do daily and never have any trouble.

Is there a better way to update the drivers? Is windows lying to me about them being updated? Or am I updating the wrong things?

    Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try it today.

Also, I finally purchased an HDMI cable. We'll see if connecting that way bypasses the problem.
