Well as your media player is not able to play dvd files well the issue could well being related to the third party install. The third party install is nothing but the codecs that is been associated with the player. Check out for the codecs that is been unplugged or missing in the media player that you have had install. There is a possibility that your media player may not respond well with certain files as it is been not functioning well.

The audio drivers that is been used or installed in the system may not be suitable or it may have been not working well with the operating system well. Check out for the issue by uninstalling the audio drivers for the hardware or the sound card. You need to install a new driver pack or the updated one in order to cope up with the operating system like windows 7. It may be that the compatibility is the issue due to which you are able to play dvd with issues on media player.

The problem could well being with the incompatibility issue or the driver that you used to work with the operating system before upgrading the system with Windows 7. It is quite obvious that some drivers that are compatible under Windows vista or Xp is not possible to work with windows 7. This is because of the advanced technological aspects been implemented in it.

There is an alternative through which you can make the things to work in your favor well. This is as follows:

    1) Right click on the audio icon of the file and then select it accordingly with playback devices.
    2) Now select the device that you are using currently.
    3) Go to the advanced tab.
    4) Clear the checkbox of option Allow application to take exclusive control of this device.
    5) Click OK.

Try running the application under compatible mode and then look out for the conclusion if its working well for you then. This should help you out in order to make the things to work as per your need. You could also try to look for the change by using some other media player. Use VLC media player and check out if it shows the same sign as that of windows media player. If it does not then it is related to the media player.
