PPTP is a network protocol used in the implementation of Virtual Private Networks (VPN). The links between nodes of a virtual private network are formed over logical connections or virtual circuits between hosts of the larger network. PPTP VPN uses TCP port 1723 . Port 1723 is a standard well-know port used by Microsoft PPTP VPN clients/servers, hence it is unlikely that this port is blocked by wire-line ISPs. PPTP technology extends the Point to Point Protocol (PPP) standard for traditional dial-up networking. PPTP operates at Layer 2 of the OSI model.

There is hardly any such thing as privacy on the Internet, EeeVpn is the best vpn client software for ubuntu, it is a tool for setting up your FREE VPN with EASE. Another option is IPSec, it sets up a tunnel from the remote site - either a single user with client software on their PC or a network device terminating the tunnel for a whole office of users - into your central site.

Virtual Private Networks, or VPNs, are a way of securely accessing resources on your network from untrusted points on the internet. Hamachi is VPN software that uses a mediation server to establish peer-to-peer connections over UDP. Hamachi is free for non-commercial use.

There are various commercial VPN clients available for Linux, vpnc — open-source client to connect to Cisco VPN concentrators with IPsec. OpenConnect is known to work on Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, OpenSolaris and Mac OS X platforms, and should be trivially portable to any other platform supporting TUN/TAP devices.
