Dual screen impossible under Windows 7

In Windows XP, I use 2 video cards: a HD4890 and an "old" PCI for dual-screen (the HD 4890 provides only one analog output, so I can not connect to my 20" LCD that with my VGA CRT 19"). I have set the bios to boot in 1 of the PCI in order to be "mounted" correctly, but it works without problems ("pci-e first," I see this pci card in the device manager, but with a "!" and a message indicating it could not be started).

Under Windows 7, nothing to do :
    - If I'm selecting "pci-e first" in the bios, it does not work (but it does not surprise me as it is the same as XP): only the LCD is detected, the PCI could not be started.
    - If I'm selecting "pci first" in the bios, the CRT (on PCI) is activated, but impossible to detect LCD connected to the HD 4890, no error in the device manager (the same so XP) but the LCD stays black

Why I am having problem with dual screen in Windows 7? Someone would have an idea? May be incompatibility issue?

What brand and model of motherboard and PCI video card are you having?

Then we can assume it could be possibly the problem with Windows 7 also. I have not already succeeded in starting my PCI graphics card under Windows Vista, and so it is possible that Windows 7 also might be suffering from the same problem

It also seems to me strange that your recent ATI could not handle two VGA. Did you tested with a DVI => CGA

Re: Dual screen impossible under Windows 7

It is true that I was a little light to this level ...

So: config brand new, mounted in late September with
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P55-DS3L
    1 graphics card (PCI-e): Sapphire HD4890 1GB new edition
2 graphics card (PCI): noname S3 Trio 64
A 20" LCD monitor (VGA only), a CRT 19" (VGA only)

I begin by responding to what you seem curious why this config flawed: My HD4890 card has connectors: 1 DVI, 1 DisplayPort and 1 HDMI. It comes with a DVI-VGA (which I connected to my LCD), and a DisplayPort-DVI adapter.

Obviously I started trying to connect the CRT via the DisplayPort adapter -> DVI provided over a DVI-VGA, what does not: only the DVI cable is analog, so that I can connect one VGA monitor (ie analog)

So I retrieved a PCI card to connect to the 2nd screen (which I used for my monitor connection, have my MSN Window, display a clock, put the toolbars in some soft drinks, in short, anything that does not require a significant graphics power, so that fits me better to default). XP requires me to boot on this PCI card (if it is detected), but once the system starts up, the HD4890 is much the motherboard, so, so good.

But, in Windows 7, nothing to do. The 2 cards work but not simultaneously.

Well, it does not take the lead on the subject than this, because, given the little info I found on the net about this, I finally ordered a DisplayPort adapter -> VGA HP, so, logically, the PCI will soon find the box.

But in the meantime for fun, I'd like to find a solution.

I feel that you'll hate me. I have bad news for you: the adapted DP => will not work. It is not an adapted active, just a plug converter and you even said yourself that your jack is not wired to analog

If your graphics card does not work then may be that is too old (before direct X). If you had a more recent that could have passed but it died

Even under XP I have been bugged with S3, so I bought a FX5200 PCI

Indeed, I saw a story of DirectX> 9, but what is surprising is that it works, but all alone.

As for the adapter, I'm not as categorical as you. Of what use such an adapter in this case, since part of its standard DP is digital, analog VGA, there is necessarily conversion. The HP site shows over here "Converts a port DisplayPort graphics card VGA port to use a VGA screen." And I was returning from a user with whom it works (on another model, but the same kind of price and same size). And then, in all cases, the VPC, so in this case I will buy a small adapter to replace my S3. With any luck, I know that tomorrow ...
