Threats From an unpatched Media Player

I have just upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7. I am not that good with Operating System knowledge. I have been told the if you install any unpatched media players like Adobe Flash Player 9.x, Macromedia Flash Player 8.x, etc, your Windows 7 will be exposed to many unwanted threats. What should I do in such case? Which anti-virus to use?

Microsoft has issued an alert for unpatched media players on Windows platform. Hackers are known to send trojan that are looking for unpatched media players. These threats can be sent as plug-ins which is for browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Opera, etc. It would be good practice not to install unpatched media players.

I have installed Windows 7 recently. I am already impressed by its performance. To be on a safer side I am not using any unpatched media players. Since these players are most of the times hacked. I have installed Avast 9.0 anti virus. It provides boot time scan which is very useful to get rid of unwanted virus and trojan.

I have earlier used unpatched Real player. When I downloaded any plug-ins for this media player, many unwanted programs got downloaded along with these plug-ins. Earlier I ignored it but later on I came to know that these program were actually the trojans sent by hackers. Therefore not to install any unpatched media players.
