What is synthetic backups?

Hello,
I am working for data center. here we mange large amount of data. so for the security purpose we have to take Data backup. I just read somewhere about synthetic backup. What is that?? Is it secure to apply that? what are the feature of this new technology? Anybody know about this ? Any suggestion??

Synthetic backups are created from a full backup of a file and subsequent incremental backups. With an incremental backup only changed information in the file is saved up.A synthetic backup is needed if the backup file backup needs as a single entity, or if it needs to restore. The content of a synthetic backup differ depending on the date chosen.Synthetic backups do not work unless the incremental backup data is timed and dated and locations of files are they talking known.Synthetic backups must be performed on a media server dedicated to this task to end the first backup and restore all types of multimedia resources.
