Avi vs mpeg file which one is best

Hi,

i want to convert all my WMV format videos but i dont know Which format is better AVI or MPEG? What is the difference between avi and mpeg? What are the differences in file structure?

The most important difference for me is that mpg files can be viewed in the DVD player. MPEG is a final product video format. After a video has been converted to MPEG, it should not be edited. Approximately a decade old, yet newer than AVI, the MPEG format was an attempt to provide quality video using smaller file sizes, having been invented by the Moving Pictures Expert Group. AVI is one of the oldest video formats still in common use, having been created by Microsoft more than a decade ago. An AVI is an Audio-Video Interleave based on RIFF headers (resource interchange file format). For years, it was the only viable digital video format available.

Several types of compression may be behind these 2 formats, and one may be the same as another. Mpeg but generally are of poor quality. AVI compresses into smaller file than MPEG nut with most codec, the video quality suffers some. Also if you're sharing the video, other users will need to download and install the codec on their PCs to view, the video and the codec may not be available on Macintosh or Linux.
