How to set-autodiscovervirtualdirectory with Exchange server 2003

I run Exchange 2003 server together with Outlook 2007 and we got a certificate for the external URL of the mail server. However, when connecting Outlook 2007 to the internal URL the application complains that the name of the certificarte does not match, which is quite annoying although it does not impair functionality. It gives the following error message "They are always prompted for autodiscover", and also the Issue is that we receive - everytime "Can not determine your settings" error message.

You can force Outlook to connect to a specific GC:

You need to go to Start, then click on Run. In the Open box, type regedit.exe, and then click OK. You need to put the following key to in the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Exchange Provider (You may have to create the registry path)

On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:

    Value name: DS Server
    Data type: REG_SZ (string)
Value data: FQDN of the global catalog server

This will allow outlook to look for GC specified for the directory services.

This may be because the Autodiscover does more than just provide services, and the Originating Server field suggest that DC was used to retrieve the data we're looking at. It does things such as making sure you are utilizing the best CAS. For example, if Exchange 2003 was in another site and there is also a CAS in that site providing Outlook Anywhere, Autodiscover would refer your Outlook client to another CAS which is in the same site as your mailbox/backend. It would make sense you're still getting prompted as Outlook will contact the Autodiscover and it's going through a CAS for Outlook Anywhere so you still utilize Autodiscover.

The Set-AutoDiscoverVirtualDirectory cmdlet configures settings on the Autodiscover virtual directory on a computer that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 that has the Client Access server role installed. The Set-AutoDiscoverVirtualDirectory cmdlet configures settings on the Autodiscover virtual directory on an Exchange 2007 Client Access server. You can run this cmdlet on the local Client Access server or from another Exchange 2007 server.

To run the Set-AutoDiscoverVirtualDirectory cmdlet, the account you use must be delegated the Exchange Server Administrator role and membership in the local Administrators group for the target server.
