How to setup Thunderbird to send and receive mail through Proxy

I'm using an commercial proxy service for surfing on net with Stunnel through 1287.1.0.1, The computer connects to the Internet via a Windows Proxy server through port 8080.8080 port. Connected to the same setup (a separate cable, but same network) is another machine, a Windows Vista with Windows Mail on it.However this one has me completely stumped as I've gone though the forums extensively and followed solutions / paths for similar issues without much success.

Now the question is how to configure my Thunderbird 1.5.0.10 to send and receive mail through proxy. If more information is needed, please let me know as I'm happy to post log-files, configuration files, or anything else requested.

Does your proxy provider block port 25 to start with? Check with them first, that'd be my first objective if I was you. if anyone is currently using Thunderbird through a Proxy server on a port other than the standard ports, please post, even if you don't know how it's set up. I'm afraid that might not be possible for me to do that, so if anyone has, just post to let me know you've done it!

I am using Thunderbird in both Ubuntu and Windows XP environment. To enable the proxy server is very hectic, you need to check whether you have setup the correct mail servers/username? Just disable the proxy agent, then the thunderbird will be able to send and receive mails, otherwise you might get "program crash while authentication..." each time you issue a "send" command.

if I remember correctly, Check that the network preferences checkbox 'use this proxy for all connections' is EMPTY. And that the line for SOCKS proxy does not contain the name and port of Squid. With those settings your emails should come in/out fine. Or else you may use any proxy server which uses a VPN-connection, which means that all traffic from your computer to the public Internet goes through the proxy server via VPN-connection. Check whether Any further send/receive problems are not related to web browser. Now again go back to the network settings panel if the squid address and port are listed under HTML and/or SSL proxy it will be attempted.
