Best pc tune up software

hello every one
I'm using Windows xp service pack 3 on my desktop,i had installed and un installed some programs on it..some one told me that even though if remove something from control panel add/remove their entries will remain on registry ,but i need to clean up registry and want to get back it's enhanced performance..so could some one advice what kind of program i need to install on my computer
