svchost.exe file is missing after uninstalling MyWebSearch toolbar

I uninstalled My Web Search Toolbar from my niece's Compaq laptop with XP home edition and now the svchost.exe file is missing. I searched for info on how to replace this file and attempted to copy it from the folder l386 but it wouldn't give me that option with copy/paste method. I also tried system restore to go back to a previous point in time but that is not working either.
Could someone please tell me how to replace the svchost file?

    Hey!
You will need your XP CD handy. Do the following :
Go to Run and type the following :
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
Keep your XP CD in the ROM while this goes on...! This will fix missing files and corrupt files from the computer...! All the best...!

Are you "just" getting an error and then XP continues and boots.

Or, does the boot process actually stop.

There are a few viruses that drop a program called SVCHOST.exe but it does not affect the Windows file with the same name.

Do you remember the name of any virus that was found prior to this problem?

I only have back up dvds no XP cd came with the computer.
The computer boots ok but many things won't work including the internet.
I ran spybot and cleaned some things up but the only other thing done was uninstalling the MyWebSearchToolbar. Now that file is missing and even help and support won't work.
There were no viruses found - just pups etc from Spybot. The virus program McAfee won't even work because the svchost.exe file is missing.
Is it possible to follow the above instructions with those back up cds?

    thanks for replying

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\svchost.exe
Check this location and see if svchost.exeis missing there.

when are you getting this message? If its when you run a program, locate SVCHOST.exe and place it in the location where the program your running is if it shows on startup, download a new SVCHOST.exe and place it in you system32 folder.
