    Installing software through Remote Desktop

    Box1 - Win2k3 server with RD enabled
    Box2 - WinXP Pro

I use box2 to connect to box1 over remote desktop connection. I'd like
to install software from box2 cd-rom drive, install onto box1. How do I
    do that?

I enabled box2 cd-rom drives to be available on box1. I can see the
drive on W2k3 but it refuses to install any software.

You can map a drive on remote back to local. I'd advise against this. I've
found some software behaves rather peculiar when installed from remote
    session.

"Refuses to install software" means nothing. Please be specific
    and report exactly what happens!

Re: Installing software through Remote Desktop

Ok. I tried installing Office XP from box2 cd-rom, install onto box1
over RD connection. It asks me:

Do you want to run this file?
    Name: Setup.exe
    Publisher: Microsoft Corporation
    Type: Application
    From: \\tsclient\D

Click Run and I got an error:

The Windows Installer does not permit installation from a Remote Desktop
    Connection.

I click OK and setup quits. I can't install it over RDC. Must the setup
data reside on the remote PC that I am controlling? In this case, the CD
must be inserted into box1 cd-rom, am I right?

Re: Installing software through Remote Desktop

Thanks Dave. In my computer, I already see drives:

    C on Box2
    D on Box2

I thought they were mapped drives, no? If it's not recommended to
install over RDC, I'll ask someone to pop the CD in the remote PC.

1.) Map a drive from the remote back to local CD-Rom drive.

2.) No, it won't make a difference where the installation media is located.

Re: Installing software through Remote Desktop

You mean use "net use" command?

    NET USE F: \\IP.OF.REMOTE.PC\SHARED-CD-ROM

    Is that command correct?

No. Map a drive from the machine you RDP'd into back to local CD-Rom drive
(machine you're sitting at). But it won't make any different since the
installer is running on remote machine and knows you're connected via a
    remote session.

Aha... I think I got it. Net Use F: \\tsclient\D
Then go to F: to run setup.exe

I am installing Ofc XP now...

You said running setup this way is not recommended?

It seems the installer database must be accessed in a directory accessible
without RDC, either locally or in a published shared folder. Otherwise the
installer fails generating Software Installation Event 110.

The message is pretty clear.... you can't do it.

Never mind. Later post indicates that it was a configuration problem..
