"open with..." will not open with??

I just installed acrobat pro on my computer. I first installed it on a second
partition I had but when I went to open a pdf I clicked "open with" and
navigated to acrobat.exe clicked open it went back to the open with box
without adding or selecting acrobat.exe. I then uninstalled it from the
second partition and added it to the partition that vista is in but the same
    thing happened.

    What gives?

This is pretty strange. Doesn't really make sense! You might want to try two
things, but no guarantees if they will work since I cannot recreate the
    problem.

    1. Before you install the program, right-click the install file (after
saving to a disk) and select Properties, and click the Compatibility tab.
Run it with compatibility mode with Windows XP (I assume it was meant for
Vista, but who cares? Might as well try it!!)

    2. Assuming you will always use this program to open the type of file you
want, click Start and go to Default Programs. Try setting adobe reader as
the default for that type of file.

Official answer? I don't have one :) But maybe worth trying.

Try registering acrobat.exe (in the registry) using this program.

Registering programs with the "Open With" dialog:
    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/openwithadd.htm

Alternately, you may edit the registry also. For more details to do that manually, see topic "Application Registration" in the MSDN site.

Thanks for the default programs tip. I didnt even realize this was there.
What would really be great though is for this to have some programs other
    than Microsoft programs there.

    Ahh well can't have everything.
    Thanks for the help though.

After you go to default programs, click on "associate a file type or
protocol with a program" locate the file extension you need and click
"change program". You may then need to click browse and search for
    acrobat.exe.

..pdf files should automatically open in Adobe though. Strange that it's not!
