It's been quite a while since we last checked on the Command & Conquer: Red Alert games, but maybe the time is right for a new chapter. The classic formula of real-time strategy games is built on harvesting resources, constructing a base, and churning out armies to crush your opponents before they can do the same, but this unusual strategy series was built around an alternate history.
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 Soviet land base
Red Alert 3, of course, is the latest sequel to the famed Command & Conquer franchise, and being a Red Alert game means that it will possess the series' standout qualities. We're talking time travel, alternate histories, over-the-top units, and quite a bit of campy live-action cutscenes with scenery-chewing performances. Going into a recent appointment to see the game, we knew that Red Alert 3 would be about another alternate universe where the Soviets, facing defeat, go back in time and assassinate Albert Einstein to rewrite history
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 Kiro vs Hydrofoils
Red Alert 3 will take place during the extended Cold War--in this case, just after the Soviet assassination of one Albert Einstein by means of the recently discovered technology of limited time travel. Yes, time travel. As lead producer Chris Corry explains, the Red Alert universe is much more of a humorous and playful place, perhaps because all of the outlandish technology that was being researched at the time seemed plausible. What if time machines had worked? And if they did, why not circus cannons that launch armored, parachuting bears over walls into enemy territory? Yes, parachuting bears are actually in the game, and they're supposed to be very powerful units
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 Allied naval warfare
A new superpower has been thrust on to the world stage, and World War III is raging. The Empire of the Rising Sun has risen in the East, making World War III a three-way struggle between the Soviets, the Allies, and the Empire with armies fielding wacky and wonderful weapons and technologies like Tesla coils, heavily armed War Blimps, teleportation, armored bears, intelligent dolphins, floating island fortresses, and transforming tanks. As with any C&C game, the very first thing you'll want to do in a Red Alert 3 battle is to establish a base and start gathering resources. In this case, the primary resource is ore, which is located in finite amounts on various nodes throughout the map. Ajami notes that the designers learned a lesson from Command & Conquer 3, which had a resource that could be exploited quickly by aggressive players. That economic mechanic meant that games could be over in a handful of minutes, so they've gated Red Alert 3's economy. Spamming refineries in this game won't be beneficial. Instead, there'll be an ideal setup, alleviating the issues EALA had with C&C 3.
