The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim land of lockpicks

I am not very far into the game (level 15) but my lockpicking skill has now reached 30 and I am running around with 50 lockpicks, this is without buying any extra ones and just starting with base lockpick skill. I am with the opinion that either there is too many picks in the world (every bandit has one it seems) otherwise picking locks is too easy (I did pick a master one) and even if they are a "high level you have so many picks you think what the hell I will try to pick it anyway.

I think that the Lock picking is fine the way it is. If it was too hard everyone would protest. If you want to balance it then yes I agree, make less lock picks in the world.

The problem with the lockpicking is that it uses Oblvion's, pick any lock period, idea and Fallout 3's, simple lock picking. The reason this worked for fallout was because you could only pick certain locks at certain level. That is way they could make it so if you dont use the perks for lock picking you would not be able to pick certain locks. That would at least make the lock picking perks useful.

I am not sure that how everyone finds it so easy to pick master locks. I am a decent level at Lockpicking right now, with a few perks, and I still break 20-25 picks on Master locks. I remember seeing one thread where someone complained about how "easy" it was because they could just save and reload when they found the sweet spot. Which I've got to believe most people are doing, because even though there are a lot of lockpicks in the world, you will run out really fast if you're low level and constantly attempting high level locks.

I just happen to be really lucky and always find the sweet spot the second or third time.

This is making it more difficult and isn’t really improving the game play, it will just end up frustrating people who start a dungeon with 20 and run out right as they discover the main loot chest. I have been there on oblivion where I have had one lockpick for a difficult door and had to reload a billion times getting more raged by the snap.

I find lockpicking hard on a character that doesn't lockpick often. Granted, there are far too many lockpicks floating about, however. They could also do with being worth a few bob so I'm inclined to sell it rather than keep for an emergency.

Lockpicking itself is such a minor barrier. Why there is an entire skill devoted to it is beyond me. Almost every merchant sells 7-15 lockpicks every time their inventory restocks and you can find them everywhere. Am level 75 lockpicking, don't have a single perk for it and Master locks are reasonably challenging without being impossible. I've had quite a few Expert locks that open from the starting position and I like that.

They definitely need to change the amount of lockpicks, as it stands right now putting perks into it is completely pointless. Even if you break 20 picks trying to break a master lock you can easily get them back in like 5 minutes by going into a dungeon. Combine the ridiculous amount of them and the fact that every time you break them on harder locks that anyone can try and that breaking one level skill a little, you end up being high level in no time at all making the perks even more pointless. I think it's a pretty decent system actually. There's no huge game-defining reason a level 1 nub shouldn't be able to pick a master lock if they're willing to break an utter shedload lockpicks. I didn't really have a LOAD of lockpicks until I was in the thieves guild.

Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim land of lockpicks

I do consider that locks are a little too simple to defeat without investing into the Lockpick skill tree. Though, I am playing on PC and the mouse is a more delicate input device than a stick, so it's easier to home in on that 1-pixel-wide "sweet spot" on a Master-level lock even without much skill. However, there is no quick fix to this problem. This is a core game design issue, not one where you can simply say "Oh the locks are too easy". In order to not completely cheat non-lockpickers of fair-earned loot, "standard rewards" need to always be unlocked. And in order to justify an entire skill tree full of perks, lockpicking needs to be considered very early in level design as far as offering shortcuts, safer routes, and greater additional rewards.

In skyrim it would seem that dungeon dwellers tend to be a lot more paranoid about ppl nicking their stuff. In regards to the number of lock picks though, i tend to find it depends what sort of dungeon you're in. bandit/forsworn dungeons tend to keep me well stocked on lockpicks, whereas dewier/flamer/animal/draught dungeons tend to have virtually none.

I think it's a good thing that there's no need in investing in lockpicking perks, that way every warrior and mage should have invested perks there as there are many thing to unlock, negative side is that is a bit of a useless tree.
