The tool works on the principle of analysis "Bayesian" which requires a learning phase. After a few days of learning, the result is spectacular and almost all spam is automatically deleted.

    Configuring SpamBayes:
SpamBayes is placed between the mail server of your Internet service provider and your email program. You must configure it to retrieve your messages well.

    Configuring mailer:
You must configure your mail client to retrieve your messages filtered through SpamBayes. The following explanations are for Outlook Express, but the handling is much the same with other messaging software (option names may differ).

    • Launch Outlook Express.
    • Click the Menu button and then click Account.
    • Double click your email account.
    • Open the Server tab.
    • In the field Incoming mail (POP3), enter localhost, which corresponds to the address of the server SpamBayes.
    • Then click the OK button and then click Close.
    • Click the Send / Receive.
    • Your mail is reduced, but not yet SpamBayes filtering by requiring a learning phase.

    Detecting SPAM:
When you start using SpamBayes, all your emails are classified as "unsure" (not sure) because the software does not yet know the difference between good and bad mail. A learning curve will allow you to improve screening and after twenty posts, you already get good results.

    • Double click on the SpamBayes icon in the notification area, right on the clock.
    • The latest list of messages you have received appear.
    • For each message listed, you must choose their characteristics by clicking the appropriate option.
    • To apply the same rule to all messages, simply click on the name of the option.
    • Finally, click on the button Train. The SpamBayes database is then updated with this information.
    • Then close the configuration window SpamBayes.
    • Repeat once a day for example (depending on the amount of mail you receive) to improve the spam filtering.
    • Already the first results are felt. New junk mail that arrive are marked by spam in their objects.

    Sorting the mail:

    • Name the new Junk Mail folder and click the OK button.
    • The folder is added to the list of folders in Outlook Express. To him we are going to redirect all messages marked as spam.
    • Click on the Tools menu, click Message Rules and then click Mail.
    • In Zone 1. Select the Conditions for your rule, check Where the Subject line contains specific words.
    • Then check the box next to move to the folder specified in zone 2. Select the Actions for your rule.
    • In zone 3. Rule Description, click on the link contains specific words.
    • Enter the word spam and click the Add button. Click OK.
    • Still in Zone 3. Rule Description, click on the link specified.
    • Then select the Junk folder then click the OK button.
    • Give a name to this rule, eg SpamBayes, then click the OK button.
    • Click Apply to immediately implement the rule to messages that you have already received.
    • Click again on the Apply button to confirm the operation.
    • Click OK, click Close and then OK.

    Check the filter:
From now on, SpamBayes filters your mail and note all those he deems to be spam. When you download Outlook Express automatically move those messages "spam" in the Junk folder. It is important to check from time to time that no legitimate mail is passed to the trash and continue learning to improve the effectiveness of filtering.

    • In Outlook Express, click the Junk Mail folder.
    • Check the list of messages that no legitimate mail is not there. If you see one, click it and drag it into the Inbox.
    • Double click on the SpamBayes icon in the notification area.
    • In the list of learning that appears, use the buttons Next and Previous Day Day to select the day the message marked as spam by mistake.
    • Then select the option Ham next to the post in question.
    • Then click the Save button to update the filter.

    Permanently delete SPAM:
You've checked the junk mail folder does not contain a legitimate message and if this is the case, you've recovered. You can then empty the folder and delete all other messages that are SPAM: an operation to renew regularly.

    • Click the Junk folder.
    • Click on a message from the right list.
    • Then click on the Edit menu and click Select All.
    • Click the Delete icon.
    • The messages are then placed in the Deleted Items folder. It'll just empty the Trash by clicking the right mouse button and choose the command Empty the Deleted Items folder.
