    Folders disappearing on restart

I have folders containing files that are disappearing when the computer is restarted.

The first time it happened a folder that had been on the computer for at least a year totally disappeared when the computer was restarted. I made another folder within the same area and it to disappeared from the computer on the next restart. (these folders were on c drive and within another folder. Each time I have recreated the folder in the same place it disappeared again on restart.

I searched the computer for any of the files and can find the history and the shortcuts but the folder and actual files can not be found. (I also checked trash)

I created the same folder in another place on the computer and that has remained, but now another folder (container a number of files) from the same place as the first folder has disappeared on a restart.

I have tried a Microsoft online scan which found nothing.

Can anyone help?? (I am new so please let me know if I have posted this in the wrong area)

Does your computer does Disk Check on reboot? That may be making your files and folders to disappear thinking its corrupt data. Use data recovery softwares to recovery your data.

first make sure you are not copying any thing in system folder in c drive which are normally hidden well but less chance of that now there is chance of virus for that try this open my computer > Tools > Folder option > view > scroll down > check on show hidden files and folder also uncheck hide protected operating system file now apply that ok then come to c drive and check that you can see any hidden files but if you not able to see any hidden files then there is virus ,malware on your system exist ....

How do I check if it is doing a disk check? I have tried recovery software to check the hardrive for deleted/lost files to no avail-is there one you would recommend?

    Thanks

I have tried the unhide previously to check if a virus had hidden the folder but could not see it - based on what you are saying (if I am reading your post correctly) you feel the folders may not be unhiding? What would be a file or folder that would be standard 'hidden' file I could check to see if this is occuring?

I will suggest you very basic check, do it and let me know what it displays, select that folder right click on it, go to property at the bottom there would be an option for hidden, remove that check box and click ok. if it is already uncheck then it would gives you nothing, but if it check and when you will uncheck, at the time of Apply it will ask for all inside file folder to make the visible click ok and continue.

Step 2: Now go to control panel-> Folder Options -> select view tab search for hidden files and folders under that click on show hidden files and folders click ok.

Now for this session it will show all hidden folders visible including your problem folder.

Then Restart your PC again and then check whether that folder seems visible to you and let me. will find the solution on it.

    Hi DayanandPatil,

I tried your suggestion with the hidden files and the folders do not have the hidden checkbox ticked. I also tried unhide all folders and it is working as is the operating system hide setting so I could see other files and folders and operating system that is usually hidden. I could still not see the two files that have disappeared?

The hard disk finds the data is corrupt and disk check happens when windows starts. Now before the login screen disk check starts which says press any key to skip disk check. Do you get anything like that? Or did you delete the data yourself and instead of pressing delete you pressed shift delete? This may also have occurred, or may be someone else accessing your data deleted the folder you want.

Is is not running a disk check on start up but I do get a message that says 'invalid boot ini file - booting from windows'. The folders have definately not been deleted. I remade the folder a few times and they simply disappeared each time I restarted the computer. Thanks

Do you have any software installed which freezes the disk? Like for example deep freeze? This software will allow you to make any changes but will discard the changes as soon as the computer is restarted. Or may be there's a virus which is doing this...
