    How to improve characters in Ubuntu 8.10

    Depending on the type and screen resolution used, the font characters are not state of great sharpness. Therefore, it is necessary to modify certain parameters to ensure that all of the texts displayed on your monitor are of good visual quality - especially in Mozilla Firefox. Let us all how to proceed.

    Open the System menu, scroll down and click on Preferences Appearance. Then go into the Fonts tab. It is here that we can set up how the characters should appear on the screen.

    Depending on the type of monitor used (LCD or CRT), choose the mode best record or better contrast in the Render section. You can also opt for souspixel Smoothing (LCD) although personally I find too strong smoothing.

    In any case, do check the Monochrome. The result is catastrophic with strong aliasing.

    Once you've determined your preferred rendering type, click the Details button. Many of the options we are offered and these will allow us to finely set the display.

    Smoothing in the section, you can choose between:
    • None: avoiding;
    • Grayscale: very good;
    • Souspixel (LCD): accentuates smoothing for LCD screens (type laptop screens or so-called "flat");

    In Section Optimization, I advise you to choose between Light and Medium, the extremes do not give a very striking result.

    In section souspixel Order, leave on RGB - the default value.

    To validate the changes, click Close.

    To go further, I suggest you change the font sizes used. To do this, click on number 10 and then specify a size smaller so that you can gain clarity - and make them look more pro to Ubuntu as well. Remember to click the button.

    The ALT-TAB is nicer. You don’t just shift through applications’ icons but through the corresponding window also. Like on the Mac, when you ALT+TAB you can quickly close an application by keeping ALT pressed and then press the F4 key.
