By default, XP defragments the boot files (used during startup). This theoretically allows a faster start. However, if you use a regular defragmentation of your drives, you realize that you defrag lost precious seconds on every boot.
This trick, though fairly well known, can be misused. Indeed, many people prefer to start defragmenting the boot. But if you regularly use a defragmenter, defragmenting the boot then slowed the start (it is unnecessary). Disabling this defragmentation will speed up the startup of Windows XP.
- Open regedit (Start menu, select Run ... and type regedit)
- Go to
Code:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Dfrg \ BootOptimizeFunction- Change the value of the key Enable N (Y by default)
- Restart.
Warning: if you do not have regular defragmentation as noted above, it is advisable to leave Enable results.
