What is google mail checker plus

I had found a addon pack from Google called as mail checker plus. What does it do actually. Is it like a desktop service or a mail client. I am using Mozilla Firefox. I had found that if I add some more addons on the browser then it gets hangs and crashed. Due to that I fear from adding addons or toolbars on it.
