Can I send password by email

I am running a server at my office. The engineer who handles this server is out of town. Yesterday we faced some problems with the server and so we are in critical situation. I called my engineer and informed to him to fix this issue but he said he is unable to come at my office so soon. So I advised him to access the server from then and there itself. Now another problem that raised that he forgot the server password. I know the password but I don't want to tell him on phone because I don't trust the conversation which can be traced at any moment. So can I send him the password via email? Or is there any other method of sending the password?

Well I don't know about hacking email or tracing telephone calls but I think it is better to avoid sending password through emails simply because you will be sending the server password which is technically and economically important for an IT based company. If your email gets broadcasted or seen by any third person then you might be completely lost which definitely you don't want to. In my opinion telephone conversation is not that vulnerable to give password. You can trust the network to some extent rather than going with email.

It is always recommended by technical people out there that emails are the most common things which are hacked every now and then. They are the easiest way to hack any network or spread viruses. The emails are the most unencrypted medium and so anyone who have little knowledge of hacking can read your email and get all the information and do whatever he wants to do. No email client can assure the 100% security of your email that the email will definitely be sent to only the recipient.

The passwords sent via email is very dangerous. The following points can be the reasons for this:
    • email is sent in plain text
    • email often is stored on several systems along the way to your mailbox
    • email often is stored on your computer in plain text or other unencrypted format
    • many copies may exist in many places, even after "deletion"
    • even encrypted email can be broken in to, given enough computing time
    • your account's security may have been compromised even before you read your email
