    Law enforcers from nine countries, five U.S. agencies, and 23 states are participating in a year-long effort targeting the top 10 Internet scams. These scams were culled from the FTC's database of more than 285,000 consumer complaints. The top 10 targeted scams were:

    * Internet Auction Fraud
    * Internet Service Provider Scams
    * Internet Web Site Design/Promotions - Web Cramming
    * Internet Information and Adult Services - Credit Card Cramming
    * Multi-level Marketing/Pyramid Scams
    * Business Opportunities and Work-At-Home Scams
    * Investment Schemes and Get-Rich-Quick Scams
    * Travel/Vacation Fraud
    * Telephone/Pay-Per-Call Solicitation Frauds (including modem dialers and videotext)
    * Health Care Frauds

    Take action if one of these scams happens to you! The FTC and your ISP want to know and can help you if you are being subject to these fraudulent activities. If you find that your credit card has been involved in a scam, be sure to call and write to your credit card company right away, describing your experience.

    1.Make sure your web-browser (the software you use to view websites, most commonly Internet Explorer or Netscape) is set to the highest level of security notification and monitoring. These options are not always automatically activated when your computer is set-up, so check your manual or the "Help" option
    2. Know who you're dealing with - get the sellers' phone number (not a mobile) and postal address (not a PO Box number)
    3. Only shop on secure sites - before submitting your details ensure that the locked padlock or unbroken key symbol is showing in the bottom right of your browser window. The beginning of the online retailer's internet address will change from "http" to "https" when a purchase is made using a secure connection. Use sites you trust, i.e. sites you know or that have been recommended to you
    4. If you have any doubts about giving your card details find another method of payment
    5. Never disclose your PIN to anyone and never send it to anyone over the internet
    6.Click on the security icon to ensure that the retailer has a valid encryption certificate. The address on the certificate should match the primary address in the address bar, This certificate should explain the type and extent of the security and the encryption the site uses
    7. Print out your order and make copies of the retailer's terms and conditions. There may be additional charges such as local taxes and postage, particularly if you are purchasing from abroad. When buying from overseas remember that it may be difficult to seek redress if problems arise, but having all the relevant information will help your bank or building society take up the case if you have any problems
    8. Ensure you are fully aware of any payment commitments you are entering into, including instructions for a single payment or a series of payments
    9.Check you bank/building society statements as soon as you receive them. Raise any discrepancies with the retailer concerned straight away. If you find a transaction that you didn't make, contact you bank/building society immediately
    10.If you regulalry make transactions over the internet consider opening a separate credit card account specifically for these transactions

    Re: Online shopping: types of product and safety

    Many of the concerns consumers have about online buying are based on irrational fears. Nevertheless, these fears must be addressed. Having a simple return or order cancellation policy, displaying customer product recommendations and reviews, and having an easy-to-use site all help build consumer trust.
