Hello, It is quiet simple to answer. XAML is nothing but the file of XML but only extra providing the UI elements. If you want to read this file then you must need to use the WPF framework or Silver light framework which can render this file. Both of this frameworks are developed by the Microsoft. First the Development of the WPF had been done and afterwards the Silver Light has been developed.

I am not having more details about all but I know that Both the WPF and Silver Light are used to render the XAML file. But Silver Llight is Framework which can be supported on different platforms. But, the WPF is supported only on WINDOWS platform. So, you can make use of the Silver Light as it is the new concept from the Microsoft.

If you consider the features and working of the WPF then you will come to know that Silverlight is the subset of the WPF. Most of the Features and Functions are similar of both Silverlight and WPF. Development of Silverlight is done by the Microsoft for competing with Adobes Flash. Microsoft had developed the WPF for making use of the different graphic applications for it's desktop platform. It can be also used on the Web browser for providing graphic solution on the web browser. XAML is stand for the eXtended Application Markup Language.

WPF runs on the .NET runtime and if you are developing any new application then you can make use of it for developing good application with .NET Framework. SilverLight is the similar concept as the WPF. Both of this are used to render the XAML files on your platform or web browser. If you want more details about the both, then you must read the .net books and then you can able to get more knowledge about it.
