    MS SQL Server Desktop Engine

I have got Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine installed for using with WSUS. Even though most of the functions seem to be working in the WSUS, with a few download errors, but in the little services applet in the quick icon, there are no services available, it just remains blank. Also, I am getting the below error message in the log:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: MSSQL$WSUS
    Event Category: (8)
    Event ID: 19011
    Date: 7/19/2005
    Time: 4:02:54 PM
    User: N/A
    Computer: 2K02
Description: The description for Event ID ( 19011 ) in Source ( MSSQL$WSUS ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: ConnectionListen(Shared-Memory (LPC)) : Error 5

    Event Type: Error
Event Source: Windows Server Update Services
    Event Category: Update Services Service
    Event ID: 421
    Date: 7/19/2005
    Time: 4:03:51 PM
    User: N/A
    Computer: 2K02
Description: Connection to database failed. Reason=SQL Server does not exist or access denied.. Connection string: Data Source=2K02\WSUS;Initial Catalog=SUSDB;Connection Timeout=60;Application Name=WSUS SQL Connection;Trusted_Connection=Yes;Pooling='true'; Max Pool Size = 100

    Thanks for any help.

Re: MS SQL Server Desktop Engine

Unless there is a SQL server engine installed on the default instance, the SQL server service manager will be blank. How did you install the database, for instance, based on the error messages present, have you tried to use the DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 installation parameter? You can check out the detailed information in the Deployment Guide for installing MSDE 2000 Release A on Windows 2000 Server for use with WSUS. If you didnt refrence them, then it may prove useful.

Re: MS SQL Server Desktop Engine

Thank you for the helpful information, I just downloaded and installed it without any special configurations and it did name the instance MSSQL$WSUS. For that I havent used parameter during the installation. The only thing that I have missed is the patch and when I installed the ms03-031 then it has not changed anything.

If you cannot connect to any MSDE 2000 instance or SQL Server Desktop Engine (Windows) instance on the Windows Small Business Server 2003-based computer, you may have to turn on the Shared Memory protocol option. To do this, follow these steps given here - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920899
