Does batteries gets discharge faster while storing at cold place?

Hello, friends I have NOKIA 5110 and I have 2 batteries of this device. I use this battery alternately when the other battery discharges, so I always have both the batteries charge every time for emergency use. The cycle of both the batteries has going ok from many months, but from few days there is very cold weather stuck over here and I am noticing from this colds that my batteries are discharging fast, so friends I just want to ask you guys that Does batteries gets discharge faster while storing at cold place?

Yes, it is true that cold temperature effects batteries and discharge them faster and the weather is lot more cold this days. Even I have extra battery which I use them in emergency period but I store the waiting battery on top of the furniture of the living room so the temperature over there I normal.

Yes, the cold weather can and humidity can cause the battery to lose its charging fast compare to normal weather. This happens even with me from many days since the cold weather has been started, so you must take the special care of your batteries these days like you must use zip lock bags or you must at least keep your batteries at room temperature.

The battery like of rechargeable battery slows down and also the cold kills and shorts the battery life, so keep the battery to last long in this cols season first you must warm the battery then use it on your device.

The lithium batteries works great in GMRS portables and mobile. I don’t think that cold discharge battery power faster, also I have read at many websites that keeping batteries in cold place like refrigerator increase battery life.

There are many rumors about keeping batteries in refrigerator increase battery life but it not true because the current I battery is generated when there is connection in positive and negative terminals and when the terminals are connected the chemical reaction initiated and that generates the electric supply to device. In cold temperature the chemical reaction becomes slow and there is low flow of current.

The battery doesn’t discharge faster in cold weather as the there is low chemical reaction in battery, the battery stops producing charging after some time so you need to heat the batteries before using it.

You are right, as the battery discharge because battery can’t release enough current that device wants, if the battery is warmed up again it will again cooperate normally. But preheating batteries is not unusual in certain situation because if the battery is warm and isolated it may make sense to use the battery's own power to operate a heating coil, so it reasonable to have warm battery to use son try to keep battery in normal temperature place so it will be warm.

Due to cold temperature the battery runs downs fast and it is not in use because it’s slowly lose its charge because leak in both the terminals. And you lose your emergency battery power fast because the chemical reaction in batteries is depend on temperature, so the unused battery lose the charging more slow at cooler temperature for example: battery lose at normal temperature battery goes flat in two weeks but in cold temperature battery goes in less than a week.

Freezing battery at the cold temperature can cause to damage battery because the capacity to hold the maximum charge is reduced in batteries, so don’t charge battery under 10 degree temperature, also don’t freeze battery below 5 degree.
