ok you are having HTC Sensation which is an android phone and making use of ROM on your phone and this time in your case suppose that at the time of flashing a new ROM to this similar kind of phones, i can say that it will be better job to do, as its creator has suggested and flash data/factory reset and wipe dalvik cache all by means of ClockworkMod recovery, so there is a way and can say there is no extra bloat ware or old system data to shut the work down, by doing this any data stored on the phone for example contacts or system data is deleted and in addition with this any data which is of 'internal storage' which can suppose 8GB or memory card is spared, so whichever thing when is backed the data will appear to be safe.

as you may be knowing the support of your phone to ROM there may have some defects attached with and similar to this is the case where you should know that at the time of having an install of a ROM, majority on A2SD/ADSD+/+ etc will not work, and this is the location where your given the alternative to have a store of app data on an external device such as the memory card, in devices where you can take out the memory card you will require to format it by means of ClockWorkMod recovery and sort out the size of your 'hidden' EX3/4 partition that app data is able to store while. formatting takes place and having a partition of your memory card wipes all the thing on it so back it up to a PC previous to that of performing.

you can have a look with your android supporting the HTC Sensation XL that it is in built supported with an internal storage ensure for all the benefits of it and also make sure you get all the thing you wish for and in last turn it off then at the time we have CWM to work with on the HTC Sensation XL try to have a format of the crap out of the internal storage.

it is always a better thing to have a backup each time. after you have your ex3/4 partition apps, restoration of data wil be done at the time of having reinstallation of the app, an addition with this, Titanium Backup w/root permissions on a fully ROMd device will able to restore data in the similar means as it did earlier.

so all in the one i can say that, if you backup your device, all your data will be saved on backup device. i think installing a new ROM will not prove to be a beneficial one, if you loose your data in a way.
