can i use an at&t iphone with out a data plan

my sister is some what thinking about buying a used iPhone from one of her friends. she is to anxious to buy it but she is worried about the appropriate data plan. i have very less knowledge on iphones. is there a possible some how get rid of the associated data plans with the iphone. i have never done it before but it may take me to jail break or some how unlock it. or make some changes to it in order to make it not connect the data services.please help me out with choosing weather to buy it or not.

i do not think it is possible on at&t. the iphone will get deleted by their network any they will force you to buy a data plan. they do not even allow for the iphone to be used as a gophone. the only real matter is that they come to know about the phone on their network. all of this is really not worth the risk. according to them the iphone can only be used under their contract even if the 2 year contract plan gets over still they do not allow the phone to be used on other networks. i really recommend you to not take any such risks over the matter and go with the plan the phone originally came with or choose not to
buy it its your call.

the only method you have is to unlock the iphone after jail brake nothing else. if you are going for a 3g or 3gs then you can easily jail break either of them. i used to own two phone both were 3g and sold them for upgrading to iphone 4. The iphone 4 can be JailBroken but there are still no updates on unlocking them. i have got no idea about weather the iphone 4 can be unlocked. i should probably have a look at that.

ya sure now i see you people are talking about the "real world" may be. but how can anyone allow them to go on creating such obligations let alone at&t. you might think that its their rules or blah blah.; but as a person who lives amongst the society for whom the constitution has formed there is no way that after the contract period is over there is nothing they can do it is the owner of the phone who has the right to decide. i do not agree on this and who in the right mind would have the time and/or money to pursue such issues.

the main problem here is being forced to pay for some thing one does no require, and the concept of people saying do not use do not get is just not beneficial for all this smells like a strategy to keep a capitalist control over the market. the thing here is the general public has accepted it without even generally knowing about it,in other words no one is even bothered, even with this know still people choose to stick with the companies responsible for such in sensible trades of policies and general public.

i have used the iphone from AT&T for near to 8 year.and do not seemed to be bothered by the network in fact i am happy with the service, but never gone for any data plans it seems irrelevant. About a year ago, my wife's had broke her phone and she bought a used iPhone 3Gs from a friend who was going for the newer model. what we did was just changed the sim to her's. as we are living at an area where there are many wifi spots we never needed to use the data plans. but out of no where we received a message from at&t stating the number you are using has bee added with an extra data plan.
