First, the iPad has no screen Retina, only makes the iPhone 4. Second, the iPhone IPAD and 4, both have IPS screens, but the PPI (pixels per inch) is the highest rating in the iPhone 4, since it has 75% of the IPAD palette. IPAD applications that support the full screen are designated by a "+" in the application. Applications that need the "2x" functionality to exhibit complete screen on the IPAD are essentially are applications that only native iPhone 4, yet, will run on the IPAD, but never as good as a native application that IPAD written to take advantage of screen space iPad.

IOS has to inform the implementation of resolutions accessible to IOS in iPhone 4 will tell the application that has a screen of 960 x 640. And the application can run the code wanted to work on this resolution. The iPad application for the iPhone is in compatibility mode for iOS lies about the resolution of the screen. And tells the application for the iPhone that is 480 x 320 so that is the way the application is running in. If the user chooses the full screen (x2) mode then IOS of four plots each pixel while it does on the screen.

What is necessary to support applications for the iPhone in the declaration of the real retina is in the IPAD IOS that the application for the iPhone that has a display of 960 x 640. And map pixel-one when drawing the canvas and it is the difficulty among doing this in 3.2.x. The difficulty is that the IPAD among IOS 3.2 was released previous to the iPhone 4 facts were disclosed and whether the IPAD had sent a version of IOS which offers 960 x 640 as a possible resolution in compatibility mode for iPhone applications then have been a real gift for the upcoming Apple iPhone 4 and just do these things.

Well, there have been versions of 3.2 points since then to correct the mistakes so at that time would have been safe to display 960 x 640 as resolution available, but Apple probably wanted to keep the item reported as simple bug fixes and maybe 'will the capacity of 960 x 640 in 4.2. And from now on (4.2 beta 2) the IPAD not, you still get the 2x button and use the graphics standard. Perhaps as more developers to create applications that will include universal IPAD also optimized graphics, which is certainly technically feasible to capture if they decide to invest the time and effort to high-end graphics or stick iPad iPod larger / iPhone user base.
